Ram 1500 Running Boards: New Body vs Classic, Crew vs Quad, and What the Listings State

Ram 1500 running boards are not one part. New-body boards and Classic boards are separate listings, and the titles say so in plain words. Find your body first, then your cab, then hold the title up against your truck.

Straight answer

No single board covers every 2019-up Ram 1500, because titles split the new body from the 2019-2024 Classic. For a new-body crew cab, our pick is the Tyger Rider TG-SS2D35098: 6 brackets on factory studs and no drilling step in the sheet. For a Classic crew cab, start with the Tyger Rider TG-SS2D35318, whose sheet warns that drilling may be required.

What's on this page

A running board is a step mounted below a truck's doors that makes it easier to climb in and out. On a Ram 1500, the trap is the name. Two trucks carried it at the same time, and the listings treat them as separate: the new body, and the 2019-2024 Classic, which titles group with the 2009-2018 trucks.

So a 2021 Ram 1500 can be either one. Do not shop by the year alone. If your paperwork says Classic, you are in the second group below. For how we handle all of this, see how we verify fitment.

Tyger Rider 3.5" (2019+ Ram 1500)

A 3.5-inch rail whose title draws the Classic line in plain words.

Why here: Its title rules out the Classic by name, and its part number leads to a maker sheet we could read.

Why it makes the list

  • Title excludes the 2019-2024 Classic
  • Part number (TG-SS2D35098) ties it to Tyger's sheet: 6 brackets on factory studs, no drilling step

Watch out for

  • The title runs to model year 2027; we could not read Tyger's own page to confirm that year
  • No weight rating in the title, so none is printed here
  • The sheet says to wire-brush paint off the studs first

Best for: New-body Ram 1500 crew cab owners. Not for the Classic.

Tyger's sheet for TG-SS2D35098 is short: 6 universal brackets, 3 factory studs per bracket, no drilling step. It tells you to clear paint off the studs with a wire brush or thread die first, and it recommends a second person. The rail is 3.5 inches wide per the title. If you want more foot area, the 6-inch COMNOVA* goes the other direction, with listing data only.

One open point: the Tyger titles run to model year 2027, the COMNOVA and aluminum titles stop at 2026, and we could not read Tyger's own page to confirm 2027. On a 2027 truck, confirm with the seller.

Classic and older crew cab: expect to read the drilling note

The sheet for the Tyger Rider TG-SS2D35318* prints "DRILLING MAY BE REQUIRED" at the top. Its front-mount photo carries the note "No factory holes in pinch weld 2009-2012 models". The sheet for the 4-inch Riser, TG-RS2D40078, is more direct: some models "will require drilling through the pinch weld", with 1/4-inch holes for the support bracket. It tells you to finish the install and level the step before you drill.

No listing here takes that question off the table. AUTOSAVER88's crew cab board* names 2009-2018 only, so do not assume the Classic. Tyger Access TG-AS2D24005* is the drop step in this group, and it names the Classic years, with listing data only. Check your exact year and cab on the listing before you buy.

Crew or Quad: go by the name and your doors

ARIES files the Ram Quad under extended cabs and the Crew and Mega under crew cabs, and it says its table is only an aid to understanding. Extended cab vs crew cab goes deeper.

Every new-body listing above says Crew Cab. We have no Amazon listing for a new-body Quad Cab. Westin's Pro-e table has no Quad Cab row for the new body either: its Quad Cab rows are the Dodge Ram 1500 2009-2010, the Ram 1500 2011-2018 and the 2019-2024 Classic. Its notes also include "Excludes Vehicles With Air Suspension", and some Ram Crew Cab rows point to the notes without saying which one, so ask Westin if your truck has air.

Bed length stays out of this unless the board runs past the cab. Wheel-to-wheel parts add it, and bed and cab fitment explains how to read those titles.

Power steps split inside the new body

Power steps add a second line. The RealTruck PowerStep* title reads "2025-2027 RAM 1500 Gas Only" and names no cab. A WOLFBOX title for the earlier trucks reads "2019-2024" and "Not for 2025-2026 & 1500 Classic". Both are listing wording only. Why the line falls at 2025 is unchecked, and so are hybrid and other drivetrains on 2025-up trucks. The wider field is on power running boards, and the part-by-part breakdown is on AMP Research.

What to do next

New body and crew cab: take the Tyger Rider unless you want a wider step or the LanderX drop step*. Classic or older: read the drilling note first, then choose. For other makes, all trucks has the full list, and best running boards sorts picks by truck.

Tailgate questions

Will running boards for a 2019-2024 Ram 1500 Classic fit a new body Ram 1500?

Not according to the listings we read. The aluminum crew cab title for the older body and Classic says "New Body Style Not Fit", and the Tyger title for the new body says "Not fit 19-24 Classic". Treat them as two different trucks. Check your exact year and cab on the listing before you buy.

What are the best running boards for a Ram 1500?

We found no independent durability test of truck running boards, so "best" here means best documented. On a new-body crew cab, that is the Tyger Rider TG-SS2D35098, because we read its maker sheet. If you want a wider step, the 6-inch COMNOVA and aluminum listings are options with listing data only.

Do I have to drill to install running boards on a Ram 1500?

It depends on the body and the part. Tyger's new-body sheet TG-SS2D35098 bolts to factory studs and has no drilling step. Its older-body sheets TG-SS2D35318 and TG-RS2D40078 print "DRILLING MAY BE REQUIRED" because some trucks have no factory holes in the pinch weld. Read the sheet for your part number.

Are there running boards for a Ram 1500 Quad Cab?

Yes, but they are a smaller group in our data. The aluminum Quad Cab listing is stated for 2009-2018 Ram 1500 and the 2019-2024 Classic, and it says the new body does not fit. We have no Amazon listing for a new-body Quad Cab. Westin's Pro-e table lists Quad Cab rows only for the Dodge Ram 1500 2009-2010, the Ram 1500 2011-2018 and the 2019-2024 Classic, and a Crew Cab row for the 2019-2027 new body.

Are there automatic running boards for a Ram 1500?

Yes, and they split by year. The RealTruck PowerStep title reads "2025-2027 RAM 1500 Gas Only". One WOLFBOX title covers 2019-2024 and says "Not for 2025-2026 & 1500 Classic". We did not find out why the split sits there, and other drivetrains on 2025-up trucks remain unchecked.

Are Ram 1500 rock sliders the same as nerf bars?

Often not, though Amazon titles blur it. Many listings with "rock slider" in the title are step rails or nerf bars with the term added. A true slider bolts to the frame, and we found no published rating behind sellers' claims about what one can bear. Read the mounting description, not the word in the title.
