Quad Cab vs Crew Cab: Telling Ram Cabs Apart for Running Board Fit
On a Ram 1500, the Crew Cab sits in the crew group of the ARIES cab table and the Quad Cab sits in the extended group. For running boards, the bigger point is that they are separate parts: Westin gives them different part numbers, and listing titles name one cab or the other. Know which you have before you read a single title.

ARIES files the Ram 1500 Crew Cab under crew cabs and the Quad Cab under extended cabs, which have smaller rear doors or a seat-forward layout. Boards do not cross over by default: Westin's table gives the Ram Quad and Crew different part numbers, and titles name one cab. Buy the listing that names your cab and years.
Quad Cab and Crew Cab are Ram's names, and they sit in different groups. ARIES says plainly that its groups are there to help you understand the three cab types, and that they do not mean the trucks share a design. We use the table the same way.
| Ram Quad Cab | Ram Crew Cab | |
|---|---|---|
| ARIES group | Extended | Crew |
| How ARIES describes the group | At least two full-size front doors, with the back seat reached by moving the front seats or through smaller rear doors | Largest group, typically four full-size front-hinging doors and two full rows, seating up to five or six |
| Trucks in the ARIES table | Ram 1500; Dodge Ram 1998-2010 | Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500; Dodge Ram 2009-2010 |
| Westin Pro-e part number, 2011-2018 Ram 1500 | 29-23555 | 29-23565 |
| Westin Pro-e part number, new-body Ram 1500 | No row in the table we read | 29-24085 (2019-2027) |
| Amazon listings in our data | Older body and Classic only | New body, older body and Classic |
The group descriptions are general. ARIES wrote them for all makes, so do not take them as a statement about Ram's door hinges or rear legroom. Open your own doors.
We could not read Ram's brochure or its FAQ page, because both refused our requests. A search excerpt of the brochure shows 5'7" and 6'4" boxes for the 2026 Ram 1500, but we could not confirm which box pairs with which cab in each year. So bed length and rear legroom stay out of this table.

Quad, Crew and Mega: same family, different parts
The name history is messier than most guides admit. In the ARIES table:
- Dodge Ram: Club Cab 1995-2001 and Quad Cab 1998-2010 under extended. Mega Cab 2006-2008 and Crew Cab 2009-2010 under crew.
- Ram 1500: Quad Cab under extended, Crew Cab under crew.
- Ram 2500 and 3500: nothing under extended. Crew and Mega under crew.
- Dodge Dakota: Quad Cab before 2008 under crew, not extended.
That last row is why "Quad" cannot be read as one thing, any more than "Double" can. Double cab vs crew cab covers the same trap with bigger stakes, and the cab types overview lays out all the names.
Why a Crew board does not go on a Quad
A board bolts to mounting points along the cab, and it has to span the doors it serves. Change the cab and those can change. The sources we read show the split, and none of them lists a shared part.
Westin. Its Pro-e table gives the Dodge Ram 1500 2009-2010, the Ram 1500 2011-2018 and the 2019-2024 Classic two part numbers: 29-23555 for the Quad Cab, 29-23565 for the Crew Cab. Some Crew rows carry a footnote mark, and the page's notes include an exclusion for vehicles with air suspension. It does not say which note goes with which row, so read the line for your truck. The new-body Ram 1500 has a Crew row and, in the table as we read it on November 2, 2026, no Quad row.
Listing titles. The older-body aluminum steps come as a Crew Cab title* and a Quad Cab title*. Both are stated for 2009-2018 Dodge Ram 1500 and Ram 2019-2024 1500 Classic, and both say the new body style does not fit. Those two are listing data only, and we read no sheet for them. Check your exact year and cab on the listing before you buy.
Tyger. The Rider titles for the new body (TG-SS2D35098) and for the older Ram and Classic (TG-SS2D35318) both say Crew Cab. Neither names a Quad Cab, so neither is a Quad part by its own words. The older-body sheet also warns "DRILLING MAY BE REQUIRED", because 2009-12 models may lack factory holes. The new-body sheet uses 6 brackets on factory studs and has no drilling step.
How to tell which one you have
Start with the name
The window sticker, or a Ram dealer with your VIN, will give you the exact cab name. Listings use that name.Compare front and rear doors
Rear doors that match the front in size point to the crew group. Clearly smaller ones point to the extended group, per ARIES.Then check the body
Cab alone is not enough on a Ram. A 2019-2024 Classic is a separate listing from the new body, even in the same year.
Full steps are on how to tell which cab you have.
Which one should you get?
If you are choosing a truck, ARIES gives the general trade-off: crew cabs have the most room and generally cost the most, and extended-cab back seats are often tighter. We have no Ram-specific figure to add, and we would not lean on a dealer's number here. If people ride back there every day, that points to a Crew Cab. If you already own the truck, the only question is which listing names it.
One practical gap: our data has far more running board listings naming the Crew Cab than the Quad Cab. If you are still choosing a truck and steps matter to you, see what is listed for your exact year first.
Where to go next
If you drive a Ram 1500, either cab
If you drive a 2009-2018 Ram 1500 or a 2019-2024 Classic
If you drive a new-body Ram 1500
If you drive a Ram 2500 or 3500
The broader comparison across makes is on extended cab vs crew cab. Crew cab running boards and extended cab running boards sort the parts by cab, and how we verify fitment explains what our fit lines rest on.
Tailgate questions
Is a Quad Cab smaller than a Crew Cab?
In the ARIES guide, yes as a group: the crew group is described as the largest of three, and the Ram Quad Cab sits one group below it. We could not open Ram's own brochure and FAQ pages, so we print no rear legroom or cab length figures. Look at Ram's sheet for your exact model year.
Do Crew Cab running boards fit a Quad Cab?
Do not count on it. Westin lists separate part numbers for the Ram 1500 Quad and Crew on the older body and the Classic, and aluminum listings for those trucks come as a Crew Cab title and a Quad Cab title. Buy what names your cab. Check your exact year and cab on the listing before you buy.
Does the Ram 2500 or 3500 come with a Quad Cab?
ARIES lists no extended-group cab for the Ram 2500 and 3500, only Regular, Crew and Mega, and Westin's table has Crew rows only for those trucks. One aluminum Quad Cab title does name Ram 2010-2026 2500 3500. Those sources do not line up, so ask a Ram dealer about your truck and confirm on the listing.
Is a Dodge Dakota Quad Cab the same as a Ram Quad Cab?
Not in the ARIES table. It files the Dakota Quad Cab from before 2008 under crew cabs, while the Ram and Dodge Ram Quad Cabs sit under extended. So the word Quad does not name one door layout across trucks, and a part for one tells you nothing about the other.
