Running Board Brackets and Bolts: Replacement Parts, Fit and Mounting Points

Replace a bracket with one made for your truck and your board, and get the bolts from that part's sheet. Brackets change by truck, cab and generation: ARIES uses different numbers for a new-body Ram 1500 and a Ram 1500 Classic. We found no maker document for a universal bracket. Bolts vary too: 8mm is common on the Tyger sheets we read, and Carr's hardware is 5/16 inch.

Straight answer

Running board brackets are made for specific trucks. ARIES sells VersaTrac brackets alone by truck, and Westin lists mount kits by year and model. The Tyger sheets we read use 8-1.25mm bolts, with 15-16 ft-lbs for class 8.8. Start with your board's part number, and match the bracket and bolts to its sheet. Check your exact year and cab on the listing before you buy.

Lost a bracket, bent one, or bought a used board with no hardware? Start with the part number of the board. The steps for a full install are on how to install running boards, and taking a set off is on how to remove running boards. This page covers the hardware itself.

Why there's no one bracket

A bracket has two jobs: grab your truck and hold the board. Trucks change between cabs and generations, so the bracket does too. ARIES's VersaTrac guide shows it plainly. These are ARIES's cab names and years, and we read them November 2, 2026.

TacomaCrew Cab 05-232055152
TundraCrew Cab 22-262055155
TundraCrew Cab 07-212055151

These numbers are for ARIES boards. They aren't a way to fit another maker's board. ARIES's generic cab names may also differ from your truck maker's, and the ARIES page covers that.

Sometimes the same bracket does cross over. ARIES lists 2055105 on both the Silverado 1500 Crew and Extended Cab rows, and Tyger's parts lists show the opposite on one kit: TG-RS2D40078 has a different front bracket than center and rear. So you can't tell from the look of it, only from the sheet.

Where to get a replacement

ARIES. Its VersaTrac brackets are sold alone. The 2055111 page says mounting brackets and hardware only, no drilling, heavy-duty carbon steel in black powder coat, and a limited lifetime warranty with three-year finish and one-year parts. Some ARIES power steps split the same way, as boards only or brackets only.

Westin. Its Running Board Mount Kits table lists kits by year and model, each with an install guide. For example, 27-2255 is listed for the 2019-2026 Silverado 1500 Crew Cab and Double Cab, and 27-2145 for the 2019 Silverado 1500 LD. Its replacement parts page also lists step pads and end caps.

Tyger, COMNOVA and other Amazon brands. We found no brackets-only listing in our data. Ask the seller first, with your board's part number. If the kit is a listing with no sheet, you may struggle to identify the part at all.

Factory boards. Go to a dealer's parts desk with your VIN. We read no factory bracket list, so we state none.

Some steps sidestep the question. ARIES says its Rocker Steps have pre-welded brackets, so there's nothing to swap separately.

What bolts the sheets call for

SheetBracket countHardware on the parts list
Tyger TG-SS2C35068 (2019-up GM crew, per title)816 x 8-1.25mm x 30mm hex bolts; 16 x 8-1.25mm x 25mm combo bolts; lock and flat washers
Tyger TG-RS2D40078 (2009-up Ram crew, per sheet)612 x 8-1.25mm x 30 hex bolts; 12 x 8-1.25mm x 25mm combo bolts; 12 x 6-1.0mm x 25mm socket head bolts; 8mm nut plates
Carr Hoop II 1039914 per box5/16-inch x 5/8-inch hex bolts with nuts and washers; 5/8-inch sheet metal screws

Read these for what they show: even on trucks with 8mm threads, lengths and head types change within one kit. Carr's hardware is sized in inches. Tyger prints this torque table on TG-SS2C35068, and these values are Tyger's for Tyger kits.

FastenerClass 8.8Class 10.9
6mm6-7 ft-lbs6-7 ft-lbs
8mm15-16 ft-lbs22-23 ft-lbs
10mm31-32 ft-lbs44-45 ft-lbs

The steps don't say which class your bolts are, so check the hardware or ask the seller. When you replace a bolt, match the size, length and class from your sheet.

Replacing a bracket

  1. Find your board's part number

Look on the listing, the box or the sheet. Without it, you are guessing at the bracket.
  2. Look up the bracket and hardware

Find the bracket for your exact truck, cab and years in the maker's guide, and read the bolt sizes off the parts list.
  3. Support the board

Have a helper hold the board or support it before you take a bracket off. Do not let it hang on the remaining brackets. Tyger's sheets recommend a second person on the job.
  4. Swap the bracket and start the bolts by hand

Remove the old bracket, clean the threads as your sheet says, fit the new one, and leave the hardware loose. Tyger's TG-SS2C35068 has you thread an 8mm hex bolt into the inserts to clear paint.
  5. Level and torque

Level the board against the truck, then tighten everything to the values in your sheet.
  6. Recheck later

The Tyger sheets say to inspect periodically and keep all hardware secure and tight. Carr asks for a final tighten after one month of use.

We can't give you a time for this, since no sheet we read states one for a bracket swap. If a threaded insert is stripped, or the pinch weld or body metal around a mount is damaged, stop and take it to a body shop. No sheet we read covers that repair, and people stand on these parts.

Common mistakes

  • Trusting "universal". Fit is stated per truck on every maker document we read.
  • Assuming left and right match. Tyger says its TG-SS2D35098 brackets go on either side, while TG-RS2D40078 doesn't work that way.
  • Reusing a bracket across generations. ARIES's numbers change at the same years the listings split, like the Ram Classic line in Ram 1500 Classic vs new body.
  • Reaching for a drill. Don't drill for a missing bracket unless your sheet says to. Can you install running boards without drilling? sorts this by kit.
  • Ignoring your warranty. A homemade mount can raise a question about resulting damage. Read do running boards void your warranty?.

Bolt-on steps and sliders

Searching "truck steps that bolt to frame" or "bolt-on rock sliders"? Those are other parts. Rock sliders sorts sliders by what the maker says they bolt to.

If you are replacing the whole kit

A new kit comes with its own brackets and hardware, and sometimes that's the simpler answer, especially if the board is unidentified. Pick one whose part number leads to a sheet you can read first.

A 3.5-inch rail whose title names the Silverado and Sierra years, the HD split and the cab.

Why here: Its title gives a part number, and that part number leads to a sheet that lists every bracket and bolt in the box.

Check your exact year and cab on the listing before you buy.

Why it makes the list

  • The part number in the title (TG-SS2C35068) ties the listing to Tyger's own instruction sheet
  • That sheet bolts 8 brackets to threaded holes behind plugs in the rocker area and has no drilling step
  • Title separates the 1500 years from the 2500/3500HD years

Watch out for

  • 3.5 inches wide per the title, narrower than the 6-inch boards
  • No weight rating in the title, so none is printed here
  • The title does not mention the 2019 LD/Limited; a sister Tyger listing groups that truck with the older body, so check before ordering

Best for: Crew cab owners on the 2019-up GM full-size who want a rail with a readable install sheet.

Tailgate questions

Are there universal running board brackets?

Sellers use that word, but we found no maker document for one. The makers we read tie brackets to specific trucks and years. ARIES's guide gives different numbers by truck, cab and generation. A bracket that fits the holes on your truck can still miss the board, so ask for the fit in writing for both.

What size are the running board bolts on a Chevy Silverado?

It depends on the board, since we found no general answer. Tyger's sheet for its 2019-up GM crew cab rail, TG-SS2C35068, uses 8-1.25mm x 30mm hex bolts and 8-1.25mm x 25mm combo bolts. Its sheet for the 2007-2018 trucks, TG-SS2C35018, uses 8-1.25mm x 25mm bolts with clip-on nuts. For a factory board, ask a dealer's parts desk.

Can I use ARIES brackets with another brand's board?

ARIES says its VersaTrac brackets are compatible with VersaTrac-equipped running boards and side steps, and its guide names its own lines. Nothing we read says they take another maker's board, so plan on no. If you have a different brand, ask that maker for the bracket that goes with your board.

How tight should running board bracket bolts be?

Use your sheet's torque table. Tyger's sheets list 15-16 ft-lbs for 8mm class 8.8 fasteners and 22-23 ft-lbs for 8mm class 10.9. Carr's hoop step sheet gives no figure and warns against over-tightening. Those values belong to those parts, so do not carry them over to another kit.
