Truck Bed Steps: AMP BedStep, Westin and Other Ways to Reach the Bed

A bed step gets your boot up to the box from the side, and it is sold by truck, just like a running board. On a 2017-2021 F-250 or F-350, start with the AMP BedStep2 75413-01A, because RealTruck's sheet states the fit, the drilling and a 300 lb load. Other trucks have their own AMP and Westin part numbers, listed below.

Straight answer

Bed steps are truck-specific. AMP's sheets give separate part numbers for the Super Duty, F-150, Ram 1500 and 2019 GM 1500, and they state a 300 lb maximum load. Westin sells retractable and side bed steps by truck. On a 2017-2021 Super Duty, start with the AMP BedStep2 75413-01A. Check your exact year and cab on the listing before you buy.

What's on this page

A side-of-the-bed step does one job: it puts a step under your boot so you can reach over the bed rail or climb in without dropping the tailgate. Cab steps do not help with that. If you are still sorting out which step you need, truck steps has the whole category by what you are trying to reach.

What the makers list by truck

Read November 2, 2026. Each line comes from the maker's sheet or page for that part. We read Amazon listings for only two bed steps, so most of these are part numbers to take to a dealer or the maker. Nobody here has fitted one.

Two things in that table will catch you out:

  • The GM sheets say 2019. That is all they say. Our 2019 Silverado LD page explains why that year is a trap, and the sheet does not settle it. Ask before you order for any later year.
  • Some Super Duty trucks already have a step. Westin's sheet for 2023-up Fords has you remove the OEM side bed step first. Look before you buy.

AMP BedStep2 75413-01A (Super Duty)

A side-of-the-bed step for Super Duty trucks, with a title and a sheet that disagree by one year.

Why it makes the list

  • The part number is in the title, so the sheet is easy to match
  • The sheet states it fits all beds and cabs on the years it lists

Watch out for

  • Title says 2017-2022; the sheet we read says 2017-2021, so ask about a 2022
  • The sheet has you drill a hole, with a 1/8-inch pilot then 11/32-inch
  • Professional installation is recommended on the sheet

Best for: 2017-2021 F-250 and F-350 owners who keep climbing into the bed from the side.

The AMP BedStep2 75413-01A* is the one bed step we can tie to an Amazon listing and a maker sheet by part number. It sits in the mid-range price class. Here is what RealTruck's sheet walks you through:

  1. Set up the bracket for your side. The frame spacer rotates 180 degrees between driver and passenger side.
  2. Hang it at the front bed mount. The bracket slides over the bed stud, and the sleeve nut stays snug, not torqued. The sheet says a swivel joint may be needed on short bed models if the emergency brake cable bracket is in the way.
  3. Fit and line up the step pad. It should sit in line with the fender and parallel to the bottom of the body line, with a shim supplied to level it.
  4. Torque, then drill. The sleeve nut and bolt go to 30 ft-lbs. The rearward support bracket is your drill guide: center punch, pilot at 1/8-inch, finish at 11/32-inch, and bolt it up at 16 ft-lbs.

The sheet recommends professional installation, gives a three-year limited warranty and states no install time, so we print none. Its owner page states "Max Load Capacity: 300lbs."

The catch: the title says 2017-2022 and the sheet says 2017-2021. If you own a 2022, get that year confirmed before you order. Check your exact year and cab on the listing before you buy.

The 3-rung retractable step: an option, not a recommendation

The 3-rung retractable step* is here because rungs are what some owners want. All we have is the title, which names a pickup or trailer bed and no make, year or cab. There is no brand or part number to chase down a sheet, so we state no fit, no mounting and no load. Ask the seller where it bolts on and whether it has been listed for your truck. Check your exact year and cab on the listing before you buy.

Tailgate ladders

If you are searching for truck bed ladder steps, a tailgate ladder is a different tool. It hangs off the tailgate, and you climb straight up. The one we read about is the Westin Truck-Pal 10-3000, on a dealer page. That page calls it a universal application, says it mounts with self-tapping screws, and says the tailgate needs to sit 38 inches or less from the ground. That is dealer wording, and we read no Westin sheet for it. Measure your open tailgate before you decide, especially on a lifted truck.

What to check before you buy

  • Your bed, not just your cab. The GM sheets split by bed, and the Ram sheet changes where the pad sits: centered on 6.5-foot beds and offset forward on 5.5-foot beds. How to measure bed length has the method.
  • The part number. Other AMP part numbers exist for other trucks. Get the sheet that matches your number, and read the application line first.
  • Load. No shared rating exists for pickup steps, and a figure on one part says nothing about another. How much weight can running boards hold? has the rest.
  • Your hands. RealTruck says to use appropriate hand holds when stepping up to or down from the bed.
  • The pad surface. RealTruck says to avoid waxes, lubricants or protectants on the step surface, to prevent slipping. Mild soap and water is what it lists.
  • Your paperwork. RealTruck's warranty covers three years from the date of purchase, excludes damage from misinstallation, and requires proof of purchase with a claim.

Bottom line

Super Duty owner with a 2017-2021 truck: the AMP 75413-01A is the straight answer, drilling and all. If what you need is a step at the rear of the bed, read hitch and tire steps. On an F-150, Ram 1500 or GM 1500, take the part number from the table to AMP Research or a dealer, since we have no listing to send you to. If nothing lists your truck, do not assume. Start from all trucks for your cab steps, and read how we verify fitment to see why we will not call a step a fit on our own say-so.

Tailgate questions

How much weight can a truck bed step hold?

It depends on the part, and only the maker's document counts. AMP's sheet for 75413-01A states

Do truck bed steps require drilling?

Some do. AMP's sheet for 75413-01A has you drill a 1/8-inch pilot, then 11/32-inch, for a support bracket. Its 75416-01A sheet drills to 17/32-inch for a rivet nut. We found no drill step in the text of the 75412-01A or 75414-01A sheets. Westin says no drilling on most applications for its retractable step.

Do I need a different bed step for a short bed?

On some trucks, yes. AMP splits the 2019 Silverado and Sierra 1500 into 75415-01A for short beds and 75416-01A for mid and long beds. Its F-150 sheet says it fits all beds, and its Super Duty sheet says all beds and cabs. So the answer sits on the sheet for your truck.

Can I drive with a bed step down?

Not on an AMP step. RealTruck's owner page says the BedStep should always be stowed in the retracted position when driving. You kick it up with your foot to retract it, and it goes back out when you press down on the outside edge. Make that part of how you close up the truck.
