Rock Sliders for Trucks: Frame-Mounted Armor vs 'Rock Slider' Nerf Bars on Amazon

Buy a rock slider by what it bolts to, not by the words in the title. Our pick is the Body Armor 4x4 Revo, because Body Armor states a 100% frame mount with no drilling. Every part in our data is cut for the Tacoma, so owners of other trucks get the method here, not a part. Check your exact year and cab on the listing before you buy.

Straight answer

Rock sliders protect the rocker panels, and the mount decides how much armor you actually bought. Our pick, the Body Armor 4x4 Revo, is stated as 100% frame mounted using factory holes. Westin's XTS sheet also bolts to the frame rail. Tyger's Star Armor sheet bolts to the floor panel instead. All are Tacoma parts. Check your exact year and cab on the listing before you buy.

A rock slider is there to take the hit, so a running board's rules don't carry over. Westin describes sliders as armor for the underside, sides and rocker panels against rocks, stumps and ruts. New to the part? Read what are rock sliders? first. Still deciding between this and a step? Read rock sliders vs running boards. This page is for picking one.

Which slider?

We read five parts, and all five are for a Tacoma. That reflects the Amazon listings in our data, not the whole market. Specialist makers such as RCI, Rock Slide Engineering and C4 Fabrication are out there too. RCI's page refused our reader, so we state nothing about their parts here.

What each one bolts to

This is the part most buyers skip, and it's the difference between armor and trim.

Body Armor Revo TC-4125"100% frame mounted utilizing factory hole locations"Maker page
Westin XTS 42-14205M12 hardware through the frame railMaker install sheet

Hooke Road tube and kick-outNot confirmedHooke Road's page would not open for us

A floor-panel mount is not a defect. It's a different part doing a different job. Tyger titles its armor "Side Step Rails Nerf Bars Running Boards" and doesn't call it a slider at all. But if you plan on dragging it across rock, you should know what's holding it on. No maker here publishes a load or impact figure, so we can't rank them by strength. We can only tell you what they bolt to.

The five, one at a time

Body Armor 4x4 Revo TC-4125: our pick

The title says "2005-2022 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab Short Bed". Body Armor's page says 2005-2023 and adds "Access Cab Long Bed", "Does Not Fit Limited Models" and "Fits 5ft bed". So the title and the maker disagree on the last year, and a 2023 owner should get that confirmed before ordering.

The rest of the page is what earned the pick: "100% frame mounted", "no drilling required", 1.75-inch tubing with a .120-inch wall, and a 3 year finish and limited lifetime warranty. The page does not name the metal and gives no load figure, so we print neither. Premium price class. Check your exact year and cab on the listing before you buy.

Westin XTS 42-14205

The Westin XTS* title names no truck. Its fit comes from Westin: the product page says 2005-2023 Tacoma Double Cab Pickup, and the install sheet says Double Cab Short Bed. Take the narrower one.

This is the best paperwork in the group. You get a 12-gauge steel channel, a bolt-on step plate with a polyurea texture coated grip surface, and a 3-year warranty, all per Westin. The sheet shows what the job takes: remove inner frame covers on some trucks, unbolt a brake line bracket, swap out a factory frame bolt, and run M12 hardware through the rail, with a warning that brake lines may obstruct one hole. It calls for help lifting the slider and gives no time, so neither do we. Premium price class, and the highest of the five. Check your exact year and cab on the listing before you buy.

Tyger Star Armor TG-AM2T20048

The Tyger Star Armor* is sold under armor wording and titled as a step, and the sheet keeps it simple: three brackets per side, factory threaded holes in the bottom of the floor panel, 8mm bolts, no drilling step. Tyger tells you to inspect the hardware periodically and to wax the finish.

It's the easy one on paper, and the one to skip if you want frame-mounted protection. Take it if your truck mostly sees pavement and you like the look. Check your exact year and cab on the listing before you buy.

Hooke Road tube sliders

The Hooke Road tube* title packs in "Rock Sliders", "Tube Rocker Guards" and "Nerf Bars", plus a real fit limit: "Exclude TRD Off-Road, TRD Sport". If you drive either trim, this title rules you out. It is the low end of this group on price. Hooke Road's page turned us away with a rate-limit error each time, so we have no mount or install wording from the maker. Ask before you order. Check your exact year and cab on the listing before you buy.

Hooke Road kick-out sliders

The kick-out version* has the same fit line and trim exclusions and adds "Steel Tube" and "Kick-Out Design". The title doesn't explain what the kick-out does for you, and we didn't read a page that does. Same gap on the mount. Same advice. Check your exact year and cab on the listing before you buy.

What to check before you order

Mount. Find the maker's words on what it bolts to. If you can't, ask. "Bolt-on" alone doesn't answer the question.

Cab, bed and trim. Sliders can be pickier than boards. Titles here limit by bed length and by trim, and Body Armor by "Limited Models". Check bed and cab fitment if you're not sure of your bed.

Weight. Westin says sliders "usually weigh 2-3x more than average running boards or step bars". Plan on a helper, as the Westin and Tyger sheets both call for assistance. Whether the added weight matters to your truck is for you and the truck's payload numbers.

Step use. Westin says some models can serve as a step, which helps on lifted trucks and big tires. The Westin XTS has a plate. If climbing in is your main need, a slider is the wrong tool: see truck side steps.

Clearance. Westin says sliders sit tight against the body. Nobody we read publishes a clearance figure. Do running boards reduce ground clearance? covers what can be said.

Load claims. No maker document we read states a load. Seller claims about bearing the truck have no published rating behind them, so don't plan on using a slider as a jack point.

Common mistakes

  • Buying the word. "Rock slider" in a title, next to "nerf bars", tells you nothing about the mount.
  • Assuming the Tacoma list carries over. Each part here is cut for a specific truck, and often a specific bed.
  • Ignoring a trim exclusion. TRD Off-Road and TRD Sport are named out on two of these titles.
  • Skipping the install sheet. On the Westin, you're working around brake lines. Read it first.
  • Expecting a board's step. A slider sits tight to the body and gives you less to stand on by design.

What do you drive?

Start with the truck. We only show what a listing title or maker states for it.

The fit finder covers boards and steps, and it does not list these sliders. Tacoma owners should go straight to Tacoma rock sliders. Need more than a slim step but less than armor? See heavy-duty running boards.

Bottom line

If you drive a Tacoma that fits the listing, take the Body Armor Revo* for the plainest frame-mount statement, or the Westin XTS if you want the step plate and a full sheet. If your truck rarely leaves the pavement, a slider is the wrong buy, and a running board will serve you better. We ran no trail test on any of this: how we verify fitment shows what we read. Check your exact year and cab on the listing before you buy.

On a Tundra, read Tundra rock sliders for what is listed by generation.

Tailgate questions

Are rock sliders frame mounted?

Some are, and you have to read the maker's words for your part. Body Armor states 100% frame mounted for its Revo, and Westin's XTS sheet bolts to the frame rail. Tyger's Star Armor sheet bolts to the floor panel. The word slider in a title does not tell you which one you have.

Can you jack up a truck on rock sliders?

Not on our say-so. Some sellers claim sliders can take the truck's weight, but we found no published rating behind that, and the Westin and Body Armor documents we read state no load figure. Do not use a slider as a jack point unless the maker's own instructions for your part say you can.

Do rock sliders need drilling?

Not the ones we could read about. Body Armor and Westin both say no drilling, and Tyger's Star Armor sheet has no drilling step. Westin's job does mean removing a factory frame bolt and moving a brake line bracket. Hooke Road's page would not open for us, so ask them for the instructions.

Are there rock sliders for trucks other than the Tacoma?

Our list has none, but that does not mean none exist. Westin's article mentions Jeeps and Broncos, and Ford's catalog has a rock rails category. All five parts on this page are stated for the Tacoma. Do not carry any of them over to another truck.

Can I build my own rock sliders?

Plenty of people search for DIY and weld-on kits, but we read no maker document or standard for them, so we give you no build advice. A slider is meant to take hits against the frame or body, so a bad weld is a real problem. Talk to a qualified fabricator before you cut or weld.
