Tacoma Rock Sliders: Bolt-On Frame Sliders vs Nerf Bars Sold Under the Same Name

Not every Tacoma rock slider is frame-mounted, and the name will not tell you. For a Double Cab Short Bed, our pick is the Body Armor 4x4 Revo, because its maker states frame mounting at factory holes and its title names the cab and bed. Other listings call a tube a rock slider and a nerf bar in one line, and the Tyger armor bolts to the floor panel.

Straight answer

Our pick for a Tacoma Double Cab Short Bed is the Body Armor 4x4 Revo TC-4125, which its maker calls fully frame mounted. Westin's XTS adds a bolt-on step plate. Hooke Road's page names factory bolts, not the frame. No Amazon slider we read names a 2024-up truck, and no maker prints a load rating. Check your exact year and cab on the listing before you buy.

This page is for Tacoma owners who want rocker protection and not only a step. If you came for a step, the Tacoma running boards page is where to shop. If you are still deciding between the two jobs, read rock sliders vs running boards first.

Body Armor 4x4

Body Armor Revo TC-4125 (Tacoma)

A rock slider whose maker says outright that it is fully frame mounted.

Why here: Its maker states the frame mount in writing, and its title names the years, the cab and the bed, which most Tacoma slider titles do not.

The same name, different parts

Here is the trap in the title. Amazon sellers use "rock slider" loosely, and many listings carrying the phrase are step rails with the term added. So read these titles for what they say about the job:

  • Hooke Road's title says "Rock Sliders", "Rocker Guards" and "Nerf Bars" in one line.
  • Tyger's title says "Star Armor" and "Side Step Rails Nerf Bars Running Boards". Its sheet calls the part Side Armor and bolts it to the floor panel.
  • Body Armor and Westin stick to "Rock Sliders" and "Rock Slider".

A word is not a mount. What separates these is where the documents say they bolt on. Our guide to what rock sliders are covers the basics, and the general buying guide is on rock sliders.

The parts, one by one

Body Armor 4x4 Revo TC-4125

Its maker's page says "100% frame mounted utilizing factory hole locations" and no drilling. It lists a 25-degree angle, 1.75-inch tube with a .120-inch wall, a slight kickout and a powder coat finish, and the warranty as "3 year finish / limited lifetime". That is the fullest paper trail among the Amazon listings.

Read the fine print. The Amazon title stops at 2022, and the maker's page says 2005-2023. The page title adds the Access Cab Long Bed, while a bullet says "Fits 5ft bed", and those are hard to square. The page also says "Does Not Fit Limited Models". On a 2023, a Limited or an Access Cab, get a yes from the seller or the maker first.

Westin XTS 42-14205

The one to take if you want a step built in. Westin describes a bolt-on step plate with a textured grip surface, states bolt-on with no drilling, and gives a 3-year warranty. It also has the install sheet you can read in full: it hangs the slider on the frame rail, using an OEM frame bolt location, and calls for assistance.

Two things to watch. The Amazon title* names no truck at all, so the fit comes only from Westin. And Westin's page says Double Cab while its sheet says Double Cab Short Bed. If you run a long bed, ask. The Westin page has more on the brand.

Hooke Road kick-out and tube

These sit in the mid-range price class, below the premium Body Armor and Westin, and the titles rule out the TRD Off-Road and TRD Sport by name. Neither the title nor the page says why. So if you have one of those trims, these are out.

Hooke Road's page for the kick-out version* says it mounts to factory bolts and stock connection points with no drilling, cutting or welding. It does not use the word frame. It lists a 1.89-inch tube at 0.06 inches thick, a 10-gauge mounting structure and a weight of about 43 lbs. That wall is half the .120 inches Body Armor and Westin state. We have no strength data on what that difference does, so it is a question to weigh and no verdict. The Amazon title has no part number, so we tie it to that page by name and trim wording only, and the listing itself stays marked as listing data only.

Hooke Road's page for the straight tube version* says bolt-on with no drilling required, and lists a 1.9-inch tube at 0.06 inches thick and about 42 lbs. It does not name a frame mount either. Neither title has a part number, so these tie to the pages by name, truck and excluded trims only.

Tyger Star Armor TG-AM2T20048

This one looks like armor and is titled as a step. Tyger's sheet uses 3 brackets per side on the factory threaded holes in the bottom of the floor panel, with no drilling step. It is a body mount, and nothing in the sheet mentions the frame. That may suit you if you want the look and an easy install. Do not buy it expecting a frame slider. The listing* states no weight rating. Check your exact year and cab on the listing before you buy.

By generation: 2nd, 3rd and 4th gen

Wikipedia dates the second-generation Tacoma to model years 2005-2015 and the third to 2016-2023. That is naming only. The Amazon titles above treat 2005-2023 as one block, so the years in the title are what you go by. No listing in our data covers the 1995-2004 first generation.

4th gen, 2024 and up. No Amazon slider we read names this truck. It has its own parts on maker sites, none in our Amazon data:

  • C4 Fabrication lists 2024-2026 in its title and 2024+ in its text. It says it fits the double cab short bed with the iForce 4-cylinder turbo and the iForce MAX hybrid, both automatic, and that manual trucks are unconfirmed. It describes mounting plates that bolt to the side and bottom of the frame, step-up plates at each door, and no drilling or welding.
  • CBI Offroad Fab lists its 2024 sliders for the Double Cab with a 5-foot or 6-foot bed and says they are not compatible with 2WD models.

3rd gen on a maker site. CBI's page is titled 2005-2023 but its text says designed for Tacomas from 2016-2023, with Double Cab long and short bed and Access Cab choices. It also says not compatible with 2WD models and rules out 4-cylinder trucks. That shows how narrow a slider can be, and how far a title can run ahead of the fine print.

We also looked at RCI Metalworks and Cali Raised, and their product pages refused to open for us. Rock Slide Engineering's home page names 3rd and 4th gen Tacoma rock rails, and that page gives no mount or load wording. So we state nothing further on those three.

How to choose a Tacoma slider

Mount first

Get the mount in writing, in the maker's own words. Frame, floor panel and "factory bolts" are three different answers. Westin's write-up says sliders usually weigh 2-3 times a running board or step bar, so expect a heavier job and plan on a helper. No install sheet we read gives a time, so we print none.

Cab, bed and trim

These are the three that catch people. A slider can be tied to Double Cab Short Bed, exclude a trim, or stop being offered for 2WD. Measure with how to measure your bed length and run the listing through how to check a listing fits.

Tube and wall

If a maker publishes the tube and wall, compare them. If it does not, ask. These are published dimensions and not strength results. No independent test we found ranks them.

Step or no step

Sliders sit tight to the body. If you climb in daily, a step plate like Westin's or C4's helps, but it is no match for a 6-inch board. Running boards for a 2005-2023 Tacoma and for a 2024-2026 Tacoma are the alternatives.

Load claims

Body Armor says its Revo can be lifted with a Hi-Lift jack at any point. CBI says its sliders are "strong enough to support the full weight of your vehicle". Neither prints a figure, and we found no published rating behind claims like these. Take them as the maker's word, and use a jack point only if the instructions for your exact part allow it. Never get under a truck held up that way.

Common mistakes

  • Buying the word. "Rock slider" in a title does not mean a frame mount. Read the mount line.
  • Assuming one Double Cab. ARIES files the Tacoma Double Cab under crew, and that does not carry over to other Toyotas.
  • Ignoring your trim. Hooke Road's titles rule out two trims, and Body Armor's page rules out the Limited.
  • Treating a step as protection. We found no rating that says a running board protects anything. See do running boards reduce ground clearance for what a low step costs you.

If you decide you want a step instead

The fit finder covers steps, not sliders. Pick your truck and cab, and it shows what the listings state.

What do you drive?

Start with the truck. We only show what a listing title or maker states for it.

Bottom line

For a 2005-2022 Double Cab Short Bed, take the Body Armor Revo if the frame mount in writing is what you are after. Take the Westin XTS if you want a step plate and a sheet you can read before you buy. Treat the Hooke Road parts as the mid-range choice with less in writing on the mount, and the Tyger Star Armor as a body-mounted armor look. On a 2024-up truck, shop the makers directly. How we read all this is on how we verify fitment.

Tailgate questions

What are the best rock sliders for a Tacoma?

We found no independent test of Tacoma sliders, so best here means best documented. Among the Amazon listings we read, that is the Body Armor Revo for a Double Cab Short Bed. Its maker states the frame mount, tube size and warranty. Owners of a 2024-up truck need a maker site, as nothing on Amazon in our data names it.

Are there rock sliders with steps for a Tacoma?

Yes. Westin's XTS has a bolt-on step plate with a textured grip surface, for the 2005-2023 Double Cab. C4 Fabrication lists step-up plates on its 2024-up sliders. A slider sits tight to the body, so check how much room the plate gives you. If daily climbing is the job, a running board does it directly.

Can a Tacoma rock slider hold the truck on a jack?

Some makers say so. Body Armor says its Revo can be lifted with a Hi-Lift jack at any point, and CBI says its sliders can support your truck's weight. Neither prints a load figure, and we found no published rating. Follow the instructions for your exact part, and never work under a truck held up that way.

Will 2005-2023 Tacoma sliders fit a 2024 Tacoma?

Do not plan on it. Makers list them separately, including C4 Fabrication and CBI, whose 2024 sliders have their own pages. The Amazon listings we read stop at 2022 or 2023. Buy a part that names your model year and cab, and confirm with the maker before you order.

Do Tacoma rock sliders need drilling?

The makers we read say no for these parts: Body Armor, Westin, Hooke Road and C4 state no drilling on their pages, and so does CBI for its older-truck slider. Tyger's Star Armor sheet has no drilling step either. Read the install sheet for your exact part, because a claim on a page is a maker's statement and not a guarantee for your truck.
