Toyota Truck Running Boards: Tacoma or Tundra, Factory TRD or Aftermarket
Searching for Toyota running boards gets you nowhere until you pick the truck. Tacoma and Tundra parts are separate listings, split again by generation and by cab. We could not read a maker sheet for any Toyota part, or any Toyota page on factory or TRD steps, so this page gets you to the right title and says where the proof stops.

Straight answer
Pick the truck first. Tacoma and Tundra parts are separate listings, split by generation and cab: Double, Access or XtraCab on the Tacoma, CrewMax or Double on the Tundra. For a 2024-up Tacoma Double Cab, start with the Tyger Access; for a 2007-2021 Tundra CrewMax, the aluminum 6-inch. For factory TRD parts, ask a dealer with your VIN. Check your exact year and cab on the listing before you buy.
A running board is a step mounted below a truck's doors that makes it easier to climb in and out. Toyota is the make where names cause the most trouble, because the same word means a different cab on each truck. Here is how the two trucks sort out, and where you go from there. All the detail lives on the Tacoma and Tundra pages.
Your truck, your cab name
ARIES says its table only aids understanding and implies no shared design across trucks.
| Truck | Extended group, per ARIES | Crew group, per ARIES |
|---|---|---|
| Tacoma | XtraCab (1995-2004), Access (2005 to current) | Double |
| Tundra | Access (2000-2006), Double (2007 to current) | Double (2004-2006), CrewMax (2007 to current) |
So a Tacoma Double and a 2007-up Tundra Double are in different columns. The newest listings add one more wrinkle: the 2024-up Tacoma titles we read say XtraCab, while ARIES has Access to current. Go by the words on your truck and your own rear doors. How to tell which cab you have takes a few minutes.
Where to start, by truck
We award "our pick" only where we read a maker sheet, and no Toyota listing has one we could read. So these are places to start, and all of it is listing data, read November 2, 2026.

The new Tacoma has the most choice
Most of the Toyota listings in our data are for the 2024-up truck. The Tyger Access* and Tyger Trax* both name the hybrid in their titles. The unbranded Double Cab board* stops at 2026. And one more listing* names 2024-2027 and no cab, so buy that one only if you can confirm your cab on the listing itself. Its seller also makes a load claim we do not print, because there is no maker document behind it. Check your exact year and cab on the listing before you buy.

Factory and TRD: what we could confirm
People search for TRD running boards and OEM Toyota steps, so here is exactly how far the evidence goes.
- Toyota's own site refused our reader on both the Tacoma and Tundra pages. Toyota dealer parts catalogs refused it as well, on all the pages attempted.
- Search results show "TRD cast aluminum running boards" on dealer and parts-site titles. We saw those as excerpts only, so we print no TRD part number or fit.
- One parts seller's catalog, ToyotaPartsDeal, lists Toyota-numbered Tacoma running boards, along with separate bracket and hardware kits and end caps. That is a useful warning: ask whether the brackets and hardware come with the board. Its year lines are that seller's, and they are not a fit statement from Toyota.
So take your VIN to a Toyota parts desk, get the part number, and ask what is included. Then compare it with the listings above. OEM vs aftermarket running boards walks through the choice.
TRD also matters the other way round, as a trim. Hooke Road titles for the 2005-2023 Tacoma Double Cab say "Exclude TRD Off-Road, TRD Sport". Those are rock slider listings, so they are a sign and not a rule, but if you own one of those trims, read the title for that line.
Rock sliders and older Toyota pickups
Plenty of Toyota owners want rock protection, not a step. Those are separate parts with their own mounting, and titles often mix the words. Start at what are rock sliders, then Tacoma rock sliders.
We have no listing in our data for a pre-Tacoma Toyota pickup, and that goes for step bars, nerf bars and sliders. We would rather say so than point you at a title that does not name your truck.
Bottom line
Choose the truck, then the generation, then the cab, in that order. The two pages to go to are Tacoma and Tundra, or all trucks if you are comparing makes. Everything here follows how we verify fitment. No Toyota part here has a maker sheet behind it yet, so the listing and the seller have the final word. Check your exact year and cab on the listing before you buy.
Tailgate questions
Are TRD running boards worth buying over aftermarket?
We cannot settle that, because Toyota's site refused our reader, so we read no Toyota document on TRD or factory steps, and we found no independent test. What we can say is how to compare: get the part number from a dealer with your VIN, and ask about brackets and hardware. Then hold it up against an aftermarket title that names your exact cab.
Do Tacoma running boards fit a Tundra?
Do not assume it. The titles on this page each name one truck, either the Tacoma or the Tundra, and their cabs carry different names too. A Tacoma Double Cab sits in ARIES's crew column, while a 2007-up Tundra Double sits in its extended column. Buy the listing that names your truck, your years and your cab.
Are Toyota rock sliders the same as running boards?
Not as a rule, though listings blur them. Some Amazon titles use both words on one part. One Hooke Road title for the 2005-2023 Tacoma Double Cab calls itself rock sliders and tube rocker guards, and it excludes the TRD Off-Road and TRD Sport. Read how the part mounts, not the word in the title. Our rock slider pages explain the difference.
Are there power running boards for Toyota trucks?
Westin's Pro-e table names the 2024-2026 Tacoma Double Cab, the 2007-2021 and 2022-2026 Tundra CrewMax, and the 2022-2026 Tundra Double Cab, and it states 300 lbs. of weight capacity per side. We have no Amazon power step listing for a Toyota in our data, so go by Westin's table for your truck.
